| FEMA launches mobile phone-friendly
web site: A web site designed specifically for mobile phone
browsers is now available for making claims for disaster assistance.
The new FEMA mobile site has already
received several hundred applications following the recent string of
tornadoes. You can view the site at
http://m.fema.gov/. Special sites that contain a lot of
information are helpful because of the smaller screens and the variety of
browsers in use on many "smart phones" in use. Mobile-friendly sites
have fewer complicated graphics, simple fonts, and narrower columns.
There is also an experimental mobile-friendly page on
this web site.

| Persons with disabilities an
important focus of emergency planning:
A project aimed at
including persons with disabilities and other special needs has been
initiated by Jefferson County DEM. Known as the
Emergency Planning Integration Project
the purpose is to include persons with disabilities in all elements of
emergency preparedness planning to assure reasonable accommodation.
A heightened awareness of this gap in emergency planning was emphasized by
the experiences of hurricane Katrina. The
goals and objectives of this project are
intended to work toward integration of all persons into the emergency
preparedness, response, and recovery process. |
